Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is a story that takes many turns in it that leaves the viewer guessing the whole way through. It seems as if there are two or three different stories going on. The story begins, with two characters; Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega. Two hit men, hired to obtain a brief case from a man who took it after killing one of their bosses friends. Vincent and Jules find themselves inside the apartment of the murder and find the briefcase. After a long interrogation by Jules to find its location, finally Vince is ordered to retrieve it. Once, Vince finds the briefcase and opens the contents inside, we find him in awe. However, we never know throughout the film what is inside. After finding what they had initially came for they shot the man multiple times before leaving. This is when the plot of the film takes a different tern, and seems to create a separate story from the original story. In this second story, we find again two men sitting in a strip club. Suddenly the scene goes to Vincent at his drug dealer’s house. He buys heroine from him and leaves to go take his bosses wife out while he is away. Mia, his boss’s wife takes Vincent to a restaurant where they win a dance completion. While Vincent is in the bathroom Mia find his heroine stash and sniffs it thinking it is coke. He later finds her passed out and takes her to his drug dealer to get an adrenaline shot to revive her. Then the movie turns to the thirds story. Butch is a boxing fighter for a living and pays a man to fix his last fight. In this fight he ends up killing a man but now he is in danger of being killed himself. He orders his girlfriend to pack up the apartment in order to run away the next day. The problem is she forgot to grab his father’s watch so he had to go back and retrieve it. He found a gun on his counter and then suddenly a man, (Vincent) came out of the bathroom and Butch shot him before he could even move. More shots were fired at him until he could return to his girlfriend to escape. Then the movie goes back to Jules and Vincent in the apartment. The two leave with Marvin and the situation turns worse when Vincent shoots him in the head. The two have to clean up the mess, which then leads them to a diner with the briefcase. The diner is robbed but Jules gets the people out of trouble and then the movie ends.

I find that if the plot were to be set in a more traditional there would be only one central story.  I think that if the film were to take a more traditional route, it still would be viewed as a successful film, because an important part about a film is to have a successful story. As a result, if I were to give this film a letter grade rating I would give it an A-, because I think that the plot overall is really well written and the style in which the film is shot is set in a way that sets it apart from the rest.
